How to search in FRIS?
Search in the search bar
• Click the search field and enter one or more words. The portal will show results where all these search terms occur together, but not necessarily next to each other. If you only want to see results where both terms are literally next to each other, write them between quotation marks.
For example: "multimedia systems".
• To see results of a query with multiple terms that do not have to occur together, but separately, you must use the OR operator
For example: liver OR transplantation gives results where one or more terms occur. Results where ALL terms occur together are ranked higher in the sorting mode "relevance"
• Use preferably Dutch terms on the Dutch version of our website, and English terms on the English language website. This will affect the accuracy of your result set.
• Wildcard search. The portal will default and implicitly assume an asterisk at the end of the search term in your search. As a result, the portal will not only search for the term, but also for words that start with the term. A search on software will therefore display all information containing the words software, software product, software system etc.
Search with the filters in the left navigation
If you have searched in the search bar, you can refine the search results by the facets displayed in the left column. This varies for each object that you have searched. For example you can further refine the result of the object researcher by its research organisation, number of publications, funding type of his projects or his scientific discipline.

How do I report changes?
For the construction of FRIS the Flemish government set up a partnership with scientific institutions, where it was agreed that all information is retracted directly (from the system) of the organisations involved.
To change your data, it is best to directly contact the managers of the HRM, project or publication systems of your own institution. You can also use the contact form on our website to identify any changes, after which we will contact your academic institution. Changes are made always through the systems of the organisations involved.
How up to date is the information in FRIS?
The information is provided directly by web services from the systems provided by the scientific institutes. Once a record of a researcher, project or publication is available in the HRM system, the project database or digital repository of scientific institution, it is forwarded to the FRIS research portal within the week.
How to filter my search result?
After entering your search term, you can first filter the search results by object, using the tabs 'researchers', 'projects', 'publications' and 'organizations'. You can then refine your search through the navigation on the left.
How does the expertfinder work?
By using the expertfinder you can trace experts (researchers or research units) through the tree structure of the scientific disciplines in Flanders.
You can first select whether you want to search a researcher or organization and then you can select the desired scientific discipline in the list of disciplines. You can open the list to select a detailed level discipline or you can also search through the search bar to filter disciplines.
FRIS and Open Access
In FRIS you can find the metadata of many publication records from the repositories of the Flemish universities and scientific institutions. So you can use the FRIS link to the Open URL of the publication in the repository of the academic institution / publishing (via DOI, Handle URL orcid reference). Depending on your license, it is possible that in this way you can directly click through to the Open Access full text of the publication.
Why do I sometimes appear two times as a researcher in the portal?
This is possible. Researchers, working at different institutions, are provided seperately by each institution to the FRIS portal. We can link the names if your ORCIDs will be provided by the institutions. In the meantime you can report it to us.
How are the keywords of a researcher composed?
The keywords that are related to a researcher are a combination of the keywords and research domains of the researcher as provided by the institution.
Is FRIS in accordance with the GDPR requirements?
In accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), every data subject has the right to access, rectification and addition, limitation of processing, data portability and the right to be forgotten. These rights can be accessed by contacting the relevant institution that is responsible for supplying the data. This can be done directly with the institution or by our contact form.
